Privacy Policy
English translation. The French version prevails.
In short
By default, Il était un choix collects no personal data. No account, no advertising, no audience measurement, no tracking. The child's first name and reading history stay on the device.
There is one exception, off by default: if a parent agrees in the Grown-ups' corner, the first name chosen for the child (and, if any, the other names chosen for the story) is sent so that the storyteller can say the sentences that carry it herself. See "The first name said by the storyteller" below.
Who we are
The app is published by MH Conseil & Stratégie, 16 rue Salvador Allende, 92000 Nanterre, France, and can be reached at contact@mhstrategie.fr.
Data kept on the device
- The hero's first name, entered by the child or the parent.
- The reading settings and the learning goal chosen by the parent.
- The history of finished stories.
- Downloaded stories and audio recordings.
This data is not sent, either to us or to any third party, except the names in the case described below, with the parent's consent. Without that consent, the storyteller says a generic first name recorded with the story (Léa or Tom). Deleting the app, or using "Erase all data" in the Grown-ups' corner, erases everything, except a mark that only says the free name trial has been used ("yes", in this device's keychain, with nothing about the child): the trial does not start over.
Downloading stories and voices
To download a new story, or a storyteller's voice for a story, the app contacts our server, hosted in the European Union by OVH SAS (Roubaix, France). Voices are downloaded ahead of time, on Wi-Fi only, then stay on the device; without a connection, the device's own voice reads. As with any internet connection, the server receives the device's IP address. It is used only to route the response and may appear in technical logs kept for at most 14 days for the security of the service. No information about the child is sent with these requests. For a subscriber, the app adds the proof of subscription described under "Subscription".
The first name said by the storyteller (option)
This option is off by default. Only a parent can turn it on, in the Grown-ups' corner protected by the parental gate, after reading what is sent and to whom.
- What is sent: the first name or nickname chosen for the child and, if they were entered, the name given to the companion, the older sibling's first name and the friend's first name; whether the hero is a girl or a boy, so the sentences agree; the family members who appear in the same sentences, as set in the Grown-ups' corner (Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa). With them go the story concerned, the storyteller, the language and the reading's age range (3-4 or 5-7). Nothing else: no photo, no exact age, no device or account identifier.
- Why: so that the storyteller says, in full and with these names, the sentences of the story that carry them, and the app plays them instead of the sentences recorded with Léa or Tom.
- When: once per story, storyteller, language and age range, then again only if a name changes. Without a subscription, only once, for the free story. The first name and the hero's gender are also sent when a parent taps “Listen” next to the name in the hero workshop, to hear the storyteller say it.
- To whom: to our server, then to the provider that produces the voice on our behalf, as our processor: currently Google Cloud (Google Cloud EMEA Limited, Ireland), with its Gemini artificial intelligence (through Vertex AI). Gemini goes through Google's global endpoint: the names may therefore be processed outside the European Union, in particular in the United States. This provider does not use this data to train its models. If we change provider, this policy will be updated before the change.
- How long: our server keeps nothing: not the names, not the sentences, not the audio, and no trace in its logs. The provider may keep the text sent in a cache for up to 24 hours, then for the time its terms set for abuse monitoring, and uses it for nothing else. The sentences received stay on the device.
- Legal basis: the consent of the holder of parental responsibility (GDPR articles 6 and 8). As the names may be processed outside the European Union, this transfer relies on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, provided for in Google Cloud's data processing addendum; Google is also certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
- Withdrawing consent: turn the option off in the Grown-ups' corner at any time. The app then erases the sentences received and goes back to a generic first name.
Subscription
Purchases are processed by Apple. We receive no name, no email address and no payment details. Apple only sends us anonymized sales reports. Apple's processing of your data is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
To download the voices and stories reserved for subscribers, the app shows our server the proof of subscription signed by Apple: the product (monthly or yearly), its end date and a transaction number. The server checks Apple's signature and the end date, then forgets this proof: it does not keep it or write it to its logs. It answers with a pass valid for 24 hours at most, which carries no identifier.
Artificial intelligence
The stories and illustrations are prepared in advance with the help of artificial intelligence tools, then reviewed and approved by a person. The storytellers' voices are generated by artificial intelligence (currently with Gemini, from Google Cloud), which the app states with the notice "AI-generated voice". They are recorded in advance, except the sentences that carry the names when the parent has turned on the option above. No other data about the child or the parent is sent to these tools, and no story is made up live in front of the child.
Your rights
Since we keep no personal data about you, we are unable to identify you. For any question, or to exercise your rights under the GDPR, write to contact@mhstrategie.fr. You may also contact the CNIL, the French data protection authority (www.cnil.fr).
Changes
Any change to this policy will be announced in the app and on https://mhstrategie.fr/il-etait-un-choix/privacy.html. Last updated: October 15, 2026.
